  • Me and You ... and tea and cakes

We’re delighted to welcome Kelly Tapper, Press Officer at Random House Children's Books, as a special guest blogger.

After months of preparation, Random House Children’s Books were excited to take Anthony on tour to celebrate the publication of his first new picture book as Children’s Laureate – Me and You. Unlike the Scottish Book Trust tour that Anthony had undertaken just a couple of weeks earlier, our trip was filled with tea and cakes rather than cups of coffee!

On Monday 24 May, Anthony kicked off the tour with a visit to Birmingham for the Birmingham Young Readers Festival. We set off early for our trains, only to discover that an electrical fault on the line meant all trains out of Euston were cancelled – what a nightmare! I rushed over to Marylebone to catch a cross-country service to Birmingham Moor Street, which meant we arrived just in the nick of time for our first event. An eventful start for the first day of the tour, but Anthony was always the professional, and had the children engaged and excited from the first word. Our favourite question of the session had to be: “how much money do you have in your…

Momentum is beginning to gather around one of Anthony’s most exciting projects as Children’s Laureate, which is all about the Shape Game.

Anthony has been playing the Shape Game – his imaginative drawing game involving one player drawing a shape at random, and the next then turning it into something recognisable – throughout his time as the Children’s Laureate, as a great way of helping us all to be creative. Now he has invited over 40 writers, artists, illustrators and celebrities to join in too, transforming an original shape he has drawn to create their own artworks.

Over the last few months, we and Anthony have been very busy, working closely with our colleagues at Waterstone’s, Walker Books and Rainbow Trust – contacting celebrities, exclaiming over the beautiful artworks contributed, and getting together to plan the launch of the Play the Shape Game book, which will take place on Monday 26 July at Waterstone’s Piccadilly, London. On the same day, we’ll also be launching an online auction of the artworks: all profits from the book and proceeds from the auction will be donated to Rainbow Trust, a charity which provides vital support to families who have a…
