Julia Donaldson visited Bishop Stortford College in Hertfordshire this month to present the award for the 2013 Bishop Stortford Picture Book Award

Callum’s Incredible Construction Kit, created by author Jonathan Emmett and illustrator Ben Mantle, was announced this year’s champion book after winning the most hearts – and votes – from the 1,324 school children taking part in the competition.

Julia came along to the announcement, speaking about her love of picture books and her work during her time as Laureate to encourage readers to act out stories, before revealing the winner and presenting Jonathan and Ben with a cup donated by the College’s Friends of the Junior School.

Second in the annual competition was The Empty Stocking written by Richard Curtis and illustrated by Rebecca Cobb, whilst Again!, by Emily Gravett, came third.

The Bishop’s Stortford Picture Book Award saw nine entries short-listed from more than 50 hopefuls.  Also in the running were Anna Hibiscus’ Song (Atinuke and Lauren Tobia), Christopher’s Caterpillars (Charlotte Middleton), Hugless Douglas and the Big Sleep (David Melling), I am Cat (Jackie Morris), My Friend Nigel (Jo Hodgkinson) and Snorgh and the Sailor (Will Buckingham and Thomas Docherty).

The schools that took part in the vote were Bishop’s Stortford College, Birchanger Primary School, Herts & Essex High School, Hillmead Primary School, Hockerill Anglo-European College, Leventhorpe School, Mountfitchet School, St Edmund’s College, Saint Mary’s School, Summercroft Primary School and Whittington Primary School.
